Fly Safari Ruaha and Selous (Nyerere National Park)

Destinations

Selous Game Reserve & Ruaha National Park

Overview

Selous game reserve (renamed Nyerere national park) and Ruaha national park are the largest national parks and certainly the highlights of Tanzania’s South. They are located a great distance apart from each other and therefore it woud take too long do drive by car from one park to the other.

For that reason we designed this safari combination with convenient and short inland flights. This safari route is often used as an extension of a safari to the northern parks. This private safari offers you the flexibility to travel at your own pace, exactly the way you like it. You will have a private safari vehicle and guide. The hotels we selected for you during this safari are Silver class. If you prefer more luxury, you can choose Gold or Platinum class hotels.

This trip is an exclusive private safari so you can enjoy your trip to the fullest! You can decide for yourself when to leave in the morning and when to return in the evening. You can also observe a specific animal or herd for as long as you like during the safari. You don’t have to be considerate of anyone. Your personal guide will advise you during the safari so that your trip will be an unforgettable experience.

Tomorrow morning your safari will begin!

You will stay in Amariah Hotel (City centre) https://www.amariah.co.tz

Amariah Hotel in Dar es Salaam is located in the heart of the city. The rooms are equipped with all the comforts to take a break from the flight. The friendly staff will take good care of you. In this hotel you have the possibility to go out and explore Dar es Salaam on your own, or with a guide.

Today you fly from Dar Es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. It is one of the largest game reserves in the world – it is even bigger than Denmark! Selous has a large number of wildlife to offer such as lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, Masai giraffes and many more! With a bit of luck you can even spot the endangered black rhino or the hard-to-find East African wild dogs.

It is a lot quieter in Selous than in the other parks, so you can enjoy a unique and undisturbed safari experience! The Rufiji, that ends in the Indian Ocean, crosses the entire reserve. Around this river is a swampy area that crocodiles love. The Stiegler Gorge is a special attraction here. This is a gorge 100 meters deep and 100 meters wide. Selous is also one of the few national parks where you can go on a walking safari with an armed ranger. If you prefer this, we can arrange it for you. But even in the car you can enjoy the landscape to the fullest and spot many animals!

You will stay in Selous River Camp https://www.selousrivercamp.com

Selous River Camp is beautifully situated on the Rufiji River and is adjacent to the Selous game reserve. The camp has a sun terrace and a swimming pool overlooking the river. Here you have the choice to sleep in a tent with beds where the bathroom is further away, or in a mud hut where you have an en-suite bathroom. After a safari day, enjoy the beautiful sunset around a fire with a refreshing drink.

After breakfast you will start your boat safari to explore the Rufiji river and its lakes. From the boat you will spot a lot of animals that come to the water to drink or to cool down. Very commonly seen are giraffes, impalas, waterbucks, kudus, warthogs and sometimes bathing elephants. You will enjoy a picknick lunch at the edge of one of the lakes. The view and nature is absolutely amazing and you can enjoy the sounds of the many habitant birds. The full day boat tour is highly recommended and is the easiest way to get as close to the animals as possible.

You will love it!

At 11 am you will take a small plane to fly from Selous game reserve to flight to Ruaha national park. It is a short flight and upon your arrival you can do your first game drive already!

Ruaha national park is the second largest national park in Tanzania but it gets far fewer tourists. The Great Ruaha River flows through the park and is the most important river in the park. Since it has a huge population of African elephants, chances are very good to spot large groups of them roaming around. It is also home to great mammals like kudu, sable and roan antelopes which cannot be found in any other national park. Many zebras, elands, crocodiles, impala, bat eared foxes and jackals live in the park as well as nearly 10% of Africa’s lion population! Other animals to spot here include leopards, cheetahs, giraffes and with a bit of luck, you may also see the endangered wild dogs!

Have your camera ready for some good pictures…

You will stay in Ruaha River Lodge https://www.ruahariverlodge.com

Ruaha River Lodge is set on one of the most stunning stretches of the Great Ruaha River. You can see game throughout the day from the comfort of your veranda. The chalet rooms with a feel of African wilderness feature a sitting area, writing desk, comfort beds and large bathrooms decorated with found timber, a shower and double basins. The long restaurant by the side of the river offers delicious meals with quality services. Breakfast is the perfect time to watch the game meander down for a drink. River Ruaha Lodge is definitely a place to relax and explore nature.

In the morning you can make another game drive or walking safari in the park, depending on your accommodation and flight. Then your driver transfers you to the airstrip for your departure flight to Dar Es Salaam and on day 8 you will arrive back home.

You like to extend your safari to visit more national parks or with a beach holiday? Tanzania offers perfect paradises to unwind after your safari, such as Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia.
